To some extent a travesty of the Du Maurier novel but a fascinating counterpoint to Rebecca.

So many favourite sequences, but to anyone 'looking for Hitchcock' in this unfamiliar milieu I would suggest the agonisingly long sequence when Newton and Laughton raid the inn. We know that Laughton is a villain but Newton doesn't, and Hitchcock makes us wait ages, in possession of privileged iunformation but unable to make any use of it, as he swaggers in cocky ignorance to his likely doom. Hitchcock is clearly to be located in just how long he drags this out.
Then the loving attention to bondage at the end; all that talk of silk and skin.Matthew Coniamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00302989527514886503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8073422001481231056.post-70500660737528237272011-02-19T21:41:02.476-08:002011-02-19T21:41:02.476-08:00Vertigo is definitely a hard film to watch. Over Notorious, North by Northwest, Rear Window? I just can't see it...

I mean, I don't even think it works as the kind of Treasure Island, swashbuckler it wants to be. Every time I watch Vertigo it gets colder and more distant, but this is wonderfully robust stuff.Matthew Coniamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00302989527514886503noreply@blogger.com
